What constitutes a drinking problem? How serious is the problem of Alcohol and Treatment amongst the young people? What are the avenues of help available to people who abuse alcohol or are alcoholics?

As per some college students heavy drinking that results in vomiting does not means they are abusing alcohol. According to them they are just having a binge and being part of the gang. Some religions demand total abstinence from alcohol. Usually most religions do consider alcohol as a sin but then again religion is relative and one that continues to evolve. So it's not really fair to say that people with religious backgrounds will avoid alcohol together. Certain religeous traditions make alcohol part of the ceremony. But on the whole, religion does provide an umbrella for addicted people to recover from their addictions.

Now let's see what the experts have to say about their perception as to who can be categorized as a person having an alcohol problem or is an alcoholic. According to them, if your alcohol consumption is creating any problems in your or other people's life around you, you might have an alcohol problem. Experts also make a distinction between those who abuse alcohol and those who are alcoholics. If due to their alcohol consumption people repeatedly neglect their responsibilities towards their loved ones, family, work and school, or repeatedly end up on the wrong side of the law, continue to drink and operate machinery, drive, or continue to drink despite their drinking creating problems in their relationships then they can be considered as Alcohol abusers. People who abuse alcohol can still limit their consumption of alcohol unlike the alcoholics who do not have any control over their drinking. The people who abuse alcohol should remember that if they do not keep an eye on their alcohol intake they may end up as alcoholics.

People who are alcoholics are afflicted with a chronic disease. In their case if they do decide to get sober again they do not have the option of cutting down on their alcohol intake. Abstinence is the only solution since once they start to drink the craving is such that they are unable to set any limit on the amount of alcohol they consume. An alcoholic trying to overcome their addiction will have the associated withdrawal symptoms, and these can be as intense as those experienced by people who are addicted to drugs. This makes the task of overcoming alcoholism all the more difficult and in their cases an outside intervention is required for them to be able to stop drinking alcohol. In spite of all the best efforts there is always the likelihood of a relapse.

Alcohol and Treatment

So is there a hope for people addicted to alcohol provided they have the realization that they have a problem. Unless the will to make a positive change comes from inside a person it's very difficult to help a person with an alcohol problem, more so for an alcoholic. For a person into abusing alcohol the change to sobriety can be relatively easy as compared to an alcoholic. With the support and love of family, friends and support groups like Alcoholic Anonymous, alcohol abusers can cut back or totally eliminate their alcohol consumption.

As far as alcoholics are concerned, since it's a chronic disease, just support and understanding will not be enough. They just cannot be helped without outside intervention. Alcoholics who do try rarely succeed. This intervention can range from a medical intervention to help them tide over the withdrawal symptoms, to cognitive behavioral therapy to help the change and enhance their thinking behavior and coping skills.
